Institutional Information

The Ohio State University, Columbus Ohio. The animal facilities at OSU encompass 17 separate buildings with 200,000 square feet of animal space. The current census and usage data are included in Appendix A. The range of species is extremely diverse including mice (many GEMs), rats, farm animals, primates, dogs, cats, and various exotics. The research programs are equally diverse and cover such areas as cardiovascular disease, cancer, immunology, genetics, virology, and neuropsychology. The Ohio State University is unique in having all the Health Sciences Colleges (Veterinary, Medical, Dental, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Allied Medicine) located on one campus. In addition, the College of Agriculture is also located on this campus. This provides the trainees unique opportunities to participate in the veterinary pathology lab animal courses as well as be exposed to a very diverse and vigorous research community that has over $65 M in NIH funded grants annually. There are approximately 800 active animal protocols and over 350 principal investigators conducting animal research at OSU. Optional rotations (two-four weeks) will be available for residents to gain experience and exposure to primate research at Nationwide Columbus Children's Hospital or GLP/contract research at Battelle Memorial Institute. The Ohio State University and Battelle Memorial Institute have many cooperative research programs. The continuity of the clinical experience will therefore be a result of these current interactions and established communication lines. Battelle Memorial Institute is a contract facility doing primarily GLP studies in a wide variety of species. Nationwide Columbus Children's Hospital (NCCH) is affiliated with OSU and faculty doing research have joint appointments with both institutions. The veterinary staff at NCCH participates in the lab animal training program seminars and regularly communicate with the OSU veterinary staff.
