Equine Semen and Breeding Management

December 8-11, 2005

This course was designed for veterinarians, technicians, owners and breeders. The speakers, known in their respective areas for clinical service education and research, provided the most up-to-date information. The program was designed to provide information that could be immediately used upon return to home or practice. The labs permitted hands-on experience and direct participation in artificial insemination, uterine and ovarian ultrasonography, rectal palpation and vulvar conformation assessment.

The equine semen seminar covered anatomy, spermatogenesis, equipment and supplies, collection techniques, semen characteristics, semen shipping, and mare preparation for artificial insemination. Day one of the equine breeding management day examined reproductive tract anatomy, the estrous cycle, breeding, artificial insemination, fertilization, infertility, and major reproductive problems. The second day looked at progesterone assays, infertility, breeding soundness exams, and embryo transfer. The final day of the seminar covered hyperkalemic periodic paralysis, cushings, neurological diseases, parturition, dystocia, hernias, and colic.

Comments from participants:
