
The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine applications for a clinical instructor or clinical-track faculty position in Small Animal Community Practice. Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent degree and a license to practice in Ohio. Applicants must possess clinical experience in a high-quality small animal primary care practice. Additional desirable qualities include interest or experience in teaching, practice management and board certification or examination eligibility in Canine and Feline Practice with the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. The candidate must have an interest in wellness and preventative health care, and have broad expertise and experience in the diagnosis and management of diseases of dogs and cats, including dentistry and general surgery. The candidate will work in a comprehensive teaching hospital and referral center with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. The Small Animal Community Practice Service currently offers specialized clinics in dentistry, weight management/nutrition, acupuncture, and behavioral medicine, in addition to general health and wellness. Shelter Medicine and Surgery are also represented within the Care and Wellness Section, and opportunities exist for outreach synergism between Community Practice and this unique student learning experience. Candidates with special skills and interests in other focused areas such as avian and exotic medicine and practice management are encouraged to apply. The Small Animal Community Practice Service seeks to create a respectful, educational and supportive environment simulating a bond-centered private practice, in which to empower veterinary students in their role as primary care veterinarians and active community members.
Primary responsibilities include year-round patient management and clinical teaching of routine wellness care and preventative medicine, client communication, veterinary economics, and practice management to senior veterinary students and interns using the available caseload and teaching resources of the college. The successful candidate will be expected to assume a leadership role in increasing the Community Practice caseload, comprised of approximately 2,500 patients per year. Clinical responsibilities are assigned up to 80% time and require flexible working hours that may include daytime, evening, and weekend responsibilities. Most appointments are scheduled and shared with students and interns. The candidate must have excellent communication skills and the ability to work cooperatively with surgical and medical specialists regarding case management. Responsibilities will also include lecture, clinical (practical), and laboratory teaching. Some off-clinic time is provided for curriculum development and scholarly activity such as clinical research and publication. Participation in continuing education, committee service, and public service is expected.
