National Aviary

Veterinary externship focusing on all aspects of avian medicine in a zoological setting.
experience is geared toward veterinary students with an interest in
avian, wildlife, or zoo medicine. The Extern will shadow two
veterinarians and learn the typical routine at the National Aviary
Hospital. Common procedures on a daily basis may include bandage changes
and wound care, general grooming, survey radiographs, blood draws,
fecal examinations, and various treatments. The extern is encouraged to
complete a special project during their rotation - from researching new
drugs to writing up a case report. Daily rounds will be held focusing on
a subject of avian medicine relevant to the days' activities.
  • Dr.
    Pilar Fish, DVM (Director of Veterinary Medicine) - Post-graduating
    from the University of Florida with her DVM, Dr. Fish completed a small
    animal internship at the University of Prince Edward Island followed by
    an exotic, wildlife and zoo animal internship at Kansas State
    University. Finally, she successfully completed the Zoo Medicine
    Residency at Oklahoma State University.
  • Dr. Jacqueline Saint-Onge, DVM (Associate Veterinarian) - After
    graduating from the Ontario Veterinary College, Dr. Saint-Onge completed
    an avian, exotic and wildlife internship at the South Wilton Veterinary
    Group in Connecticut.

Student will have access to veterinarians 9 hours per day, 7 days per week,
