Dr. Andrew Bowman and his Animal Influenza Ecology and Epidemiology Research Program (AIEERP) lab were interviewed by NBC medical correspondent, Dr. John Torres as part of the Today Show 'Flight the Flu' Series. In their efforts to develop new and better flu vaccines, scientists are studying how the virus affects pigs, who can contract and spread the virus just like humans.
Dr. Bowman and his team traveled to nearly 100 county fairs nationwide, swabbing 3,000 pigs this past year, searching for any new flue viruses that the animals might be carrying. "We're trying to understand how we can prevent virus transmission from animals to humans because that's how every pandemic virus has originated," Dr. Bowman said.
