2019 Distinguished Alumni: Calvin Washington, DVM
For his meritorious service to our country, his excellent service to the profession, and his unwavering commitment to mentoring within the community, we are pleased to recognize Dr. Calvin Washington as a 2019 Distinguished Alumnus of the College of Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Calvin Washington completed BS (1977) at Cornell University and received his DVM from The Ohio State University (1981). Soon after graduation, he founded the East Columbus Veterinary Hospital which provides high quality affordable veterinary care for residents of a socioeconomically distressed area of the city. It was Calvin’s dream to establish such a veterinary practice, and he has achieved that dream with a practice that has thrived in Columbus for 37 years.
Calvin is the premier example of a servant leader. He has successfully mentored and influenced numerous students to enter the profession. He utilizes his practice and offers life-coaching while introducing minority students to veterinary medicine as a career and has dedicated his life to mentoring one of the most underrepresented groups within the field of veterinary medicine, African American males (whom make up <2% of the profession). He also participates in career days at local schools, is a member of the Big Brother Program and contributes his time to community programs for troubled youth, such as the Foundation of Hope for which he is a board member.
Dr. Washington is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Livingston Avenue Business Association, and Ohio Veterinary Medical Association for which he serves as a member on the Committee on Diversity. Dr. Washington received the Distinguished Service Award of the Ohio Veterinary Medical Association in 2012.
While serving veterinary medicine, Calvin has proudly served the United States of America for over 25 years as an officer in the United States Army Reserves Veterinary Corp, achieving the rank of Colonel. During his military career, Calvin received several awards: Legion of Merit Award (given for exceptional meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service and achievements), two Bronze Stars, three Army Commendation Medals, and one Meritorious Service Metal. He served domestically in addition to multiple deployments to Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and Kuwait. The most impressive component is that he has simultaneously ran a successful business as sole owner of small animal private practice right here in Columbus, OH.
Throughout his many achievements, Calvin has represented our beloved institution with great poise and dignity while simultaneously working quietly and humbly to increase the racial diversity of our profession. Calvin’s leadership impact is best summed up by a quote by John Quincy Adams, ‘If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you’re a leader’.
