As you may be aware from recent media reports, there has been a voluntary recall of select Hill’s Pet Nutrition canned dog food products due to elevated levels of Vitamin D. The specific products affected may be found here: www.hillspet.com/productlist. The recall does not include any dry dog foods, cat food (dry or canned) or treats.
Intake of excessive vitamin D can lead to increased blood calcium levels and kidney damage. However, Hill’s has indicated that in most cases, dogs recover completely after discontinuation of the recalled product(s). Should your dog any of the listed products and you have concerns, please contact your family veterinarian.
The affected products were sold in stores and veterinary clinics throughout the country. The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center has identified only 8 patients whose owners purchased the affected food included in the voluntary recall. The owners of the identified patients are being notified directly by Veterinary Medical Center staff.
For further information about the voluntary recall, please contact Hill’s Consumer Affairs at 1-800-445-5777 or via email at contactus@hillspet.com.
