Ohio State's Faculty Leadership Institute provides training to advance leadership skills for College of Veterinary Medicine faculty

The Faculty Leadership Institute (FLI) is a 10-month program offered through The Ohio State University College of Medicine's Center for Faculty Advancement, Mentoring & Engagement (FAME) in collaboration with the Fisher College of Business, that provides further training to health sciences faculty in the necessary competencies to become principled leaders.

Participants can expect to elevate self-leadership skills by exhibiting emotional intelligence and recognizing strengths, challenges and values as a leader; strengthen stewardship skills by developing the ability to initiate and lead change efforts; and improve relational skills by formulating mutually beneficial solutions that build consensus and resolve conflict.

Rustin Moore, DVM, PhD, DACVS, dean, Ohio State's College of Veterinary Medicine, wants College of Veterinary Medicine faculty to be aware of this program and to take advantage of this unique opportunity to grow their leadership and communication skills.

"The FLI program at Ohio State is a way for our faculty here at the College of Veterinary Medicine to connect with and learn from other members across our health sciences institutions to advance their leadership skills through an introspective lens, " said Moore. "Faculty within the College of Veterinary Medicine serve as leaders in the field of veterinary medicine in many different capacities. The faculty that have moved through this program have expressed great benefit that can help them excel in their roles, and I hope that more of our faculty members will take advantage of this program," Moore said.

The College of Veterinary Medicine has had ten faculty members participate in this program to date. Below are quotes from past participants about their experiences.

“This has been the best professional development experience I’ve had so far! All faculty should try to learn more about negotiation, communication, team building, and overall leadership skills early in their careers!” -Andreia Arruda, DVM, MSc, PhD, assistant professor, Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine.

“My journey through the OSU Faculty Leadership Institute (FLI) program has been an exceptional experience with considerable personal benefit. While the program's focus is the support and growth of business-centric leadership and communication skills, the human connections I formed with other members of the health sciences community were an unexpected bonus. The speakers offered a variety of viewpoints and real-life examples that I could readily put to use in my professional career. The coaching mentors opened my eyes to my personality strengths and weaknesses and offered guidance on how to leverage these in a leadership role. Most importantly, the interactions within my small group and the cohort offered a fresh perspective on managing challenges faced throughout the medical community."  -Georgina Newbold, DVM, DACVO, assistant professor, Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences.

“The OSU Faculty Leadership Institute (FLI) program has been an invaluable experience.  The programming was excellent and included speakers with expertise in leadership skills such as team building, communication, negotiating, and strategy.  I am amazed at how many of the skills taught have become a part of my everyday work. The leadership assessment and coaching helped me develop personally as a leader and the connections I made with my small group members will continue even after the program has ended.” -Sue Knoblaugh, DVM, DACVP, associate professor, Department of Veterinary Biosciences.
